General Borewell Drilling Rules and Regulations for Rajasthan

Drilling borewells in Rajasthan is regulated by specific rules and regulations to ensure the sustainable use of groundwater and the preservation of the environment. These regulations are designed to maintain the water table, prevent overexploitation, and promote responsible groundwater extraction practices. If you are planning to drill a borewell in Rajasthan, it is essential to understand and comply with these rules. Here are the key regulations you need to be aware of Obtaining a Borewell Drilling Permit
1. Permission from the Ground Water Department:
Before drilling a borewell, you must obtain permission from the Ground Water Department of Rajasthan. Contact the local office of the department to initiate the permit application process.
2. Application Process:
Visit the Ground Water Department office and request the application form for drilling borewells. Fill out the form with accurate information, including your personal details, proposed borewell location, depth, and purpose of drilling.
3. Submission of Application:
Submit the completed application form along with the required documents to the Ground Water Department office. Ensure that you have all the necessary supporting documents as specified by the department.
4. Verification and Approval:
The department will verify your application and conduct site inspections, if required. Once your application is reviewed and found to be in compliance with the regulations, you will receive approval for drilling the borewell.

Compliance with Depth and Distance Restrictions
1. Minimum Distance:
Borewells should be drilled at a minimum distance from potential sources of contamination such as septic tanks, soak pits, and sewage treatment plants. The specific minimum distance may vary based on the regulations of the local authorities. Consult with the Ground Water Department or local municipality to determine the minimum distance requirements in your area.
2. Depth Restriction:
There are restrictions on the maximum depth to which a borewell can be drilled. The maximum permissible depth is determined based on various factors, including the geology of the area and the availability of groundwater. It is important to adhere to these depth restrictions to prevent adverse impacts on the groundwater resources.

Registration and Reporting
1. Registration of Borewell:
After drilling the borewell, it is mandatory to register the borewell with the Ground Water Department. Contact the department to complete the registration process and provide the necessary details about the borewell.
2. Reporting Water Extraction:
Regularly report the amount of groundwater extracted from the borewell to the Ground Water Department as per the prescribed frequency. This reporting helps in monitoring and managing the groundwater resources effectively.

Other Guidelines
1. Rainwater Harvesting:
Encouraging rainwater harvesting practices is an integral part of groundwater management in Rajasthan. It is advisable to implement rainwater harvesting systems along with borewell drilling to recharge the groundwater table and ensure a sustainable water supply.
2. Professional Assistance:
Engage experienced and licensed drilling contractors who are familiar with the regulations and have the necessary expertise to execute the drilling process safely and responsibly.
It is important to note that the rules and regulations for drilling borewells in Rajasthan may be subject to updates and revisions. Therefore, it is recommended to consult the Ground Water Department or relevant authorities to ensure compliance with the most recent guidelines.
By following these rules and regulations, you contribute to the preservation of groundwater resources, promote sustainable water management practices, and ensure the long-term availability of water in Rajasthan.
